Common Locks and Lock Mechanisms
General basic guide to some common locks is use today.

Rim (Yale) Cylinder.
Usually found on wooden front doors. Operates a night latch on the other side of the door. Easy to change cylinder.

Euro Cylinder
Usually found on uPVC, composite doors and patio doors. Easy to change cylinder.

Euro Thumb turn
Euro cylinder found usually in apartment doors. With a thumb turn rather then a key for the inside of the door.

Mortice Deadlock
Usually found on wooden front doors below a night latch. Insurance companies normally require that a 5 lever British Standard version be installed.

Mortice Sash lock
Similar to the mortice deadlock however rather then just a key way the lock has door handles. Again British Standard versions are required by most insurance companies.

Standard Night latch
Usually found on wooden front doors. Operated by a rim (Yale) cylinder on the outside of the door. This part only requires changing if faulty. Offers basic security and usually used with a mortice sash lock or deadlock.

British Standard Night latch
A larger more secure night latch that conforms to British Standards. Automatically deadlocks and can be further locked by a key from the inside or outside.

Multi-Point Lock
The strip or mechanism on the inside of uPVc, patio and composite doors. Usually on replaced if faulty. Parts available for repairs or servicing for most types and models.
